Founder and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, backup singer Cassie Gaines, and her guitarist brother Steve Gaines were killed on impact.
The Convair CV-240 passenger plane crash also claimed the lives of pilot Walter McCreary, co-pilot William Gray, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. However, twenty people survived the plane crash.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s personal security manager and one of the survivors of the plane crash, Gene Odom, told the news outlets, “The crash took away one of the great American musicians, It took from me a lifelong dear friend and fishing buddy.”
Gene raised up with Van Zant and other founding members of the iconic band in Jacksonville, Florida. He said the plane ran out of fuel at the height of about 10,000 feet and crashed violently into a wooden area.
Gene was thrown away from the plane and found by rescue teams after some time under one of the wings with terrible injuries.
According to Gene Odom, he suffered a big hole in his head from flying over the fuselage, several broken ribs, a broken neck, and 45 years of pain.
The news of his three band member’s death was opened to him after he got out of the hospital.
Gene said that the only cause that helped twenty people to survive is there was no fuel left on the CV-240 passenger plane, so there was no fire.
The guitarist Gainess had just joined the band a year earlier at the behest of his sister.
